Josyf Cardinal Slipyj (1892-1984) was a prominent Ukrainian Greek Catholic leader and hierarch who played a significant role in the preservation of the Ukrainian Catholic Church during the Soviet era. He was born in the village of Zazdrist in Western Ukraine and was ordained as a priest in 1917. Cardinal Slipyj became the Archbishop of Lviv and Metropolitan of Halych in 1944, and was later elevated to the rank of cardinal in 1965 by Pope Paul VI.
During the Soviet Union's persecution of religion, Cardinal Slipyj courageously defended the rights of the Ukrainian Catholic Church and its faithful. He endured years of imprisonment and forced labor in Soviet prison camps, including 18 years in the infamous Gulag system.
